Dear :
Enclosed is a prospectus for a magazine to be entitled
%2Science and Technology Opinion%1. We are seeking financial
and organizational support for this magazine from people who
are concerned by the fact that the publications helping to form
the opinions on the relations between science and technology
on the one hand and political and social issues on the other
are almost entirely liberal in their political orientation.
In fact the main publication influencing sciencetific
public opinion is the "New and Comment" section of %2Science%1,
published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The curious fact is that this section is written by journalists
without scientific training. There have been many complaints that
this magazine often suppresses letters and articles that don't
agree with its liberal editorial policy.
There are two journals of opinion with some importance among
scientists. One is %2Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists%1, and the
other is %2Science for the People%1. The first has a liberal
orientation with emphasis on peace issues with a negative attitude
toward defense. The second is a radical magazine.
The scientific and engineering community is very large
and influential. It has an especially large influence with
Congress and the executive branch of the Government.
In our opinion the political life of the country will
be improved if a balance can be created for the liberal bias
of present publications writing on science and public affairs
for the scientific and engineering communities.
Sincerely,
